Overview
Created here at TKOG, the Oxford Drive replicates the circuit of a certain shred-tastic high-gain distortion pedal from the 1990s, but with more gain, more volume, bonus clipping options, extra voicings, flexible soft-touch true bypass, and top-mount jacks, all in a small 1590B enclosure. The current pedal version also has the exact same “soft touch” knobs as can be found on a variety of vintage gear from the UK.
Modes
The voice switch lets you choose between three EQ responses for the pedal, adding a new palette of tones when combined with the powerful EQ.
- The ‘91 voicing is the darkest, offering a focused distortion sound with a powerful mid-range punch. It accurately replicates the Shred-tastic distortion from 1991 (it’s also the sound of the Oxford Drive V1).
- The ‘88 voicing offers a crisp tone, perfect for rhythm playing. It's inspired by a Gubernatorial distortion from 1988 (a close sibling). The ’88 voicing adjusts both the input and output filters, mitigating the harsh upper-mids found on some pedals with a simple bright-switch mod.
- The newest voicing, ‘01, is the brightest by far, offering an aggressive, cutting distortion sound. It replicates by a famous variant of the circuit, housed in a shield-shaped enclosure, used by garage rock bands in 2000s New York City.
There are three clipping modes
- The Silicone mode (“Si”) is the “stock” setting, offering a compressed and focused tone sound with plenty of overtones.
- The LED mode has a more “open” sound,swell-suited to rhythm playing. LEDs have a higher clipping threshold, which results in more volume, and more prominent opamp (rather than diode) clipping. At lower gain settings, it may even sound more like a boost. It’s inspired by the LED-clipping found on Guv'nor and Drivemaster pedals, both of which have circuitry related to the Shredmaster. - The Asymmetrical mode is an unusual silicone/LED hybrid, which has plenty of dynamic range while still providing the warm, fat sound associated with asymmetrical clipping.
